We also had Joe Veneto who is an Experiential Tourism Thought Leader who gave the audience some insight into a destination or a business providing different experience levels: Level I - Show and Tell - this is vanilla and no one wants a vanilla vacation.
Level II - Engage - Get the visitor involved someway, adding elements to a tour can make it unique.
Level III - Immerse - Best level for visitor activity. Involve guests in the experience, kayaking, cooking, something interactive.
A recent dm-connection blog post from October 2017, mentioned a discussion at the IMEX trade show - they talked about how destinations that create exciting environments or experiences will have visitors that tell others (social media) and they will come back to visit again.
